having troubles restoring backup. says sysvol not in backup so -authsysvol command not working.

I tried it again just now and had changed browsers. but also did the recover step last since it had been giving me so much trouble and this time I had no problems doing lab. I had done the lab on my home lab and it had no problems so it was weird the online lab did the 4 times I tired it. With no steps different. other then reopening ad after deleting items and other checks of backup.

Following steps correctly via the lectures and having the same issue where “No SYSVOL component was found in specified backup.”

I cannot quite discern what you did in order to get it to work for you Ambrose. Could you elaborate more on how you ensured the sysvol was present?

I wanted to note that I reloaded the lab, followed all the steps the same as the first with two additions: I switched from Chrome to Firefox, and after deleting the information from AD, I closed and then reopened AD. Second time around I got it to work.

I am experiencing the same issue with sysvol. How do I ensure sysvol is in the backup?
I have tried to restart the lab several times to no avail.

I just completed this lab with 100% and it did not “check box” meaning completed after I exited out of the grading page.

Hi profile avatar aaron marriotti

I see you have completed the Lab: Active Directory Backups. The one I see is not complete is the Lab: ADUC PowerShell Automation. Let me know if there is an issue with it not marking as complete or if you need further help.

I run the system state recovery to end and it goes ok. After lock in as admin i try to check if the backup was restored and I get this error message: Unable to execute script within virtual machine Lab25609542-SADC01. The credentials passed to PowerShell are invalid. So i cant go forward to snapshot because my AD server is not activate? I tried couple of times and same error 🤔

Hi profile avatar Ritva Niemela
Is this when scoring the recently performed task out of the virtual machine? If it is the case when clicking the score button make sure Windows is up and running on the desktop.
Let me know if you are ok now since I see your second post on checking the lab to complete it.
Thank you,

This is Backup and Restoration, what if its a migration from an old server running AD DS to a newly installed AD DS

Typically on Windows Server AD DS migrations, I have installed a new version and joined it to the domain. I then migrate the FSMO roles from the old server to the new one and decommission the old server.

There might be other methods depending on your environment. Here is a link to migrate different roles:

You are doing it right. It should work with the Virtual Keyboard but it is tricky since it might reboot before getting ready to press F8. You can also press the F8 key on your keyboard, placing the cursor on top of the Windows Virtual Machine.

Hi Guys,
I have been running this for a week and have been getting this error message. I have tried all the troubleshooting that I could lay my hands on, including those here but all to no avail.

ERROR- “The value for the parameter or option: version is missing”.

After rebooting the pc in DSRM mode, and signing back in with the local admin account, I get an error that states, “The remote shared folder does not exist”. I stored the backup on the shared drive folder [ //sadc01/netlogon ]. I am not able to attach a screenshot in this comment .

Hi profile avatar Brandon Addai

That’s correct, I see the folders missing when entering in DSRM. That’s because you are in that special mode trying to recover AD. Your backup should be stored anyway on %systemroot%\sysvol\sysvol\[domain name]\scripts folder. The problem is we can’t trick the wizard during the recovery to use the local path unless you share the scripts folder. It will be a good idea to use another shared folder 🙂

Hello, so it’s probably a dumb question (I’m extremely new to this) but there’s no backup folder in the shared drive, and I have no idea how to create one, what do I do now? 🙁 Thank you in advance for any help!

Hi profile avatar Hamza Al-Koubaisi

You need to create the Backups folder under the C:\ drive. Check the following steps on how to do it:

I’m half-way through the Active Directory Backups lab but now can’t access it. I was waiting for it to restore the backup, went to make a cup of tea and when I came back I clicked ctrl-alt-del, but the screen just flickers for a second and nothing happens. The logon screen doesn’t appear. I’ve restarted it but it’s still doing the same thing.

Hi profile avatar Kirsty Hall

Thank you for letting us know. I will check on the lab to see if there’s any issue.
I see the lab is in a saved state and you might be able to resume it. Not sure if that might be the reason but you can always restart a new instance on the lab if needed.

Hi profile avatar Dale Green

Check if the share is available by entering the UNC path on the File Explorer window. If it is it might be a command syntax issue as well if the share is available.

Hi profile avatar John Thorne

I was doing the lab doing the System State Backup suppressing the -authsysvol from the wbadmin in command prompt, but after reboot I don’t see the error as you shared on the screenshot. I note that you did it twice already so that is weird since we are doing the same IT lab. Did you do the reboot with msconfig? Can you reboot the server again after a backup?

right got it, the backup command worked with the -authsysvol command when i rebooted the machine using the msconfig procedure, the first two times i tried this, i tried the F8 system and selected the “directory services repair mode” and the wbadmin start systemstaterecovery -version:[Insert your version identifier here] –authsysvol wouldn’t run with the –authsysvol at the end, but it ran fine after rebooting the machine using the msconfig. so i have now passed that with this.

I booted safe mode using msconfig. After I did the backup (like you, I couldn’t use -authsysvol so I ran my statement without it.). I had to uncheck safe mode within msconfig before rebooting the VM. After that, I got this exact same problem and I’m not sure what to do.

Reboot the VM one more time. The -authsysvol parameter just specifies that the SYSVOL directory should be authoritative for the domain after the system state recovery. Since we have one domain it should not matter. Checking and unchecking with msconfig there’s a change in the boot configuration data (BCD) and it might be the reason fro the error.

Do let us know how it goes.

I am on attempt number 4 or 5 to go through this lab and I am stuck on the restore. Each time I am not able to do the restore with the authsysvol flag on the wbadmin command to restore. I had even tried to do the restore through the GUI with no success. Looking here it is talked about restarting in different ways and using different browsers and they could then get it to work, but that was also with a timestamp of over a year ago. I have tried with no success.

If I go through and remove that flag and complete the restore, the backup utility tells me it was completed successfully. I am able to reboot out of safe mode and into the AD\administrator account.

But when I try to access the AD users and Computers I get an error message.

Hi profile avatar Jannet Finlayson,

I’ll try the lab again since it seems you are doing it the right way. I did remember that message as well when doing it. I remember letting it sit on the server for some minutes, maybe 5 and restarting again. I believe it was related to time or services being started/synced. I’ll post back the findings.

I performed the lab a couple times but did not see the error from active directory when doing it without -authsysvol.

Using different browsers shouldn’t be an issue since that’s not something it has to do with the backup/recovey.

The console prompt shared is not a common one unless the system state was not chosen but I did not tried. doing it that way.

Most of the time doing the lab a couple times works for some student in case an option was missed the first time. That’s something to try as well.

Hi,

I am having the same issue as Jannet. I’ve tried waiting 5 minutes and rebooting. AD users and Computers give me the same error message.

The error message is not easy to replicate or can appear randomly when opening an Active Directory tool if the tool can’t connect to a DNS server or domain controller. Since after a restore we are bringing backed up services online at a different point in time. It might be that DNS service it has failed to start or may be hung or stopped hence rebooting again and or waiting for the service to come back online fixes it sometimes. Since AD and DNS are on the same server and we only have one DC then a reboot should do it unless something happened when restoring the backup. This is a real life example when backups are done OK or without error and when restoring issues appear out of nowhere. You can try restoring from the same backup once again and see if it displays the same message or perform a new backup and restore process. If time would not permit then restarting the lab and doing it again is what we suggest.

I can replicate this error message every time I try to do this lab. I’ve spent 3 attempts and followed the instructions each time. This lab takes a long time to complete due to the nature of the backup and restore – at this point considering other people are having this problem the lab needs a revisit on the backup and restore section. Everything else appears to work well.

I keep getting the error message “You do not have the correct permissions to access backups on the remote shared folder. Provide a use name and password for a user who has read permission to the remote shared folder.”

I have full permission on the shared folder I created. I tried both the local and domain admin account, and nothing worked. Please help!

Hi profile avatar Dewits Cham,

It might be either a folder name issue or a permission issue when accessing the shared folder. Go back to where the folder created to be shared and check the properties. Look for the share name (which sometimes is not as the folder name) and check the permissions if it has read, write or full permissions. It might be it has read but not write or similar. Note that it might be easier re-creating the folder than spending time troubleshooting if you feel you are spending too much time with it.

I have done everything I possibly could, but I cannot seem to restore the AD / System Backup. When I go to MSCONFIG and initiate the restart, I repeatedly press F8 on my keyboard, but it doesn’t work, and after that, I can no longer log back in.

Hi profile avatar Benjamins3

I understand it can be tricky. If you use msconfig there’s no need to press F8 since msconfig will boot into DSRM mode. The tricky part is that the first reboot you get back into DSM mode again in order to disable again with msconfig the login to DSRM option. After putting things back to the original settings in msconfig the a there reboot will put you in normal mode without pressing F8.

These are the steps I took to Restore the AD System.

#1. I properly Installed the Windows Server Backup feature.

#2. I properly created a system state backup.

#3. Once the backup system is complete, I created the Backups folder in “This PC > Local Disk (C:) > Backups.”

#4. I deleted the DNSAdmins Group from AD

#5. THIS IS WHERE THINGS BEGIN TO GO WRONG FOR ME!!!!!!

  • The first step is to go to MSConfig.
  • “Click Boot” > “Click safe boot” > “Click Active Directory Repair” > “Click Apply” > “Click ok” > “Click restart”
  • Once the system is done restarting, I try to log back in…….these are the logins I use

.\administrator
Pa$$w0rd

Once I log back in, my domain server “serveracademy” is gone. When I click “Users and Computers,” I get the following message: TO MANAGE USERS AND GROUPS ON THIS COMPUTER, USE LOCAL USERS AND GROUP. TO MANAGE USERS, GROUPS, AND COMPUTERS IN A DOMAIN, LOG ON AS A USER WITH DOMAIN ADMINISTRATOR RIGHTS.

I cannot access MSCONFIG.

I tried going back to “Tools” > “Windows server backup” > “Local backup” and clicking on recovery. It says that System State Recover is successful, but I cannot access anything in Active Directory Users and Computers.

I am so confused. This is the hardest issue so far in the course I cannot figure out.

Thank you for the detailed steps.

I see that you did step 1 OK.
Step 3 needs to be done before step 2. I believe this might be the issue since you need to create the folder first in order to include it in the wizard as a location to backup.
In step 5, the steps to enter Active Directory Repair are ok, including the username and password. Once on the Desktop, this is a special mode that disconnects the server from the domain to allow for AD recovery so I don’t expect you will be able to open Active Directory Users and Computers tool. Here then is where you restore the backup. Once the backup is restored then it will prompt for reboot, but will get into dsrm again due to msconfig. Disable it and reboot again.
If you have issues opening msconfig, what you can do is open a command prompt window or powershell and type msconfig, that can work as well.
